Sony Didn’t Show PS4 Because ‘It’s Just a Box’

PlayStation 4

The gaming world was abuzz with PlayStation 4 news last night as Sony finally announced the console was real, and coming this holiday. The one thing they forgot to do was show the actual console.

It makes sense strategically to not show all the cards in your hand all at once, but that didn’t mean eager fans weren’t questioning Sony’s decision to not show the console itself during Wednesday’s event. Polygon caught up with Shuhei Yoshida, president of Worldwide Studios at Sony Computer Entertainment, at the event to find out why Sony held back.

“We need something to show off later,” Yoshida joked. “The console is just a box. The controller was very important to show because it has the share button, but the console is just a console.”

But will the PlayStation 4 be in physical form at E3? Yoshida only offered a maybe, adding the company wasn’t sure where or when the PS4 would make its grand entrance. That said, if we already know most of the details about what’s inside (and we do), does it really matter what the PS4 looks like?
