Even if you were not watching the Tigers last night, there's a good chance you heard the news. In case you didn't, the Tigers have sent J.D. Martinez to the Diamondbacks probably signaling the beginning of a rebuild in Detroit. The Arizona Diamondbacks sent over three prospects in return.

All three prospects are infielders which is a solid pickup for a Tigers farm system that is devoid of infield prospects now that Dixon Machado is a full-time major league player.

So who are these guys?

The biggest prospect in the deal is 3B/SS Dawel Lugo. Lugo is 22 years old and is currently playing at the AA level with Jackson (TN), the Tigers AA affiliate is in Erie, PA. Lugo is having a pretty good 2017 Minor League campaign with a .282 average 43 RBIs and seven home runs in 88 games. Lugo's scouting report values his arm as his best asset. His fielding percentage is 95.5% and he's committed 11 errors in over 700 innings of work between shortstop and third base at the AA level. According to MLB Pipeline Lugo's ETA to the Majors is 2018.

In Arizona's system Lugo was ranked 4th by MLB Pipeline, in the Tigers system he slots in 11th.

The other ranked prospect of the deal is Sergio Alcantara. Alcantara, 21, is playing in the A-advanced level which for the Tigers would put him in Lakeland with the Flying Tigers. As a shortstop this season with the Visalia Rawhide in the California League he's hitting .279 with 28 RBIs. He's a switch hitter, though he hits better as a right handed hitter with a .329 average versus a .264 average from the left side. His OPS is 100 points better from the right side too. Alcantara is a speed guy on the base paths but so far this year he's stealing at just over a 50% clip (11/21 success rate). His fielding rate is acceptable with a 96.1% percentage in 85 games at shortstop.

With the Diamondbacks, Alcantara was ranked as the number 15 prospect in their system. With the Tigers he ranks 18th.

The last piece in the deal was shortstop Jose King. King, 18, has never played higher than rookie ball spending last year in the Dominican League (of which he is a native) and this year he is playing in the Arizona Rookie League. He is a career .336 average hitter though that is weighted heavily towards his Dominican campaign (.350 in 61 games). This year in the AZ League he's hitting .261 in 13 games. The Tigers have three rookie league teams they could slot King on to. Two of them are in the Gulf Coast League in Florida or the more likely assignment to the Tigers affiliate in the Dominican League.

That's the haul for J.D. Martinez, many fans were upset that the return seemed light. However as many baseball experts pointed out last night, the market is demanding pitching, not position players.
