Smashing Pumpkins Unveils ‘Monuments to an Elegy’ Lead Single ‘Being Beige’
Smashing Pumpkins are back, as they've just unleashed the new song 'Being Beige.' The track is the first release in what promises to be a wealth of new material from the band over the coming year. The song is featured on the 'Monuments to an Elegy' disc, which is due to drop on Dec. 9.
The song starts off with a minimal drum beat and piano part, but quickly grows into something much bigger with crashing guitars and more filled out drum beats courtesy of Motley Crue's Tommy Lee while frontman Billy Corgan sings about the world being on fire. The song is the perfect blend of grand rock moments and the intimate bits that bring variety to the track.
Corgan says of the 'Monuments to an Elegy' album, "My goal was having the impetus for a double record. But think of how it would be consumed in a surface-level culture made me want to split the work apart, which in itself has changed the process, writing and review."
As for bringing in Lee, the vocalist adds, "The songs, in demo form, had a strut and so the suggestion was made that we ought to get someone who 'plays like' Tommy. Jeff Schroeder said, 'Why not get the real deal?' Tommy brings the power and grace he's known for, which gives the music a vibrancy that is both immediate and unmistakable."
With 'Monuments to an Elegy' now locked in for a December release, Corgan and his cohorts are currently working on 'Day for Night,' their follow-up to 'Monuments to an Elegy' which is expected in late 2015. The frontman reveals, "It literally is the other side of the sonic moon. At this early stage it appears to be a deeper work: less shiny, and more personal, which is always a quizzical thing to bring out in the open."
