On Friday, May 25th, Norwegian black metal band Satyricon hit New York City's Gramercy Theatre for a sold-out show, and it was likely the last time that will happen.  Due to Visa complications, it's been nine years since Satyricon toured the States due to complications obtaining visas and excessive paperwork, so when they announced their farewell US tour, it was bittersweet for the band and the fans.

With only 15 dates on this run, metal fans traveled from all over the country to catch the final few shows. The New Orleans based death metal band, Goatwhore kicked off the show promptly at 8 pm for a short, powerful performance.

Soon, Satyricon opened the show with "Midnight Serpent," a song off their new album Deep Calleth Upon Deep, and then took fans through nearly two hours of a mixture of new songs and old classics spanning most of their discography. Frontman Satyr owned the stage behind his trident with a composed, yet commanding demeanor while Frost pummeled the crowd with his fast and tight drumming.

"Now, Diabolical" was a highlight; during that song, the audience started chanting the chorus and a large mosh pit broke out across the entire venue. With a looming curfew, the band closed out the show by humbly thanking their fans before going into the final song, "K.I.N.G.," a crowd favorite.  When the song ended, the band stood in front of a cheering crowd for well over a minute. As Satyr recently told us, there's a slim chance they may return to the U.S. "If some band wants to bring us over there and there's machinery in the future willing to pay for all of this to be organized on our behalf, sure I'm happy to come back.”

But, he noted, “It is highly unlikely for that to ever happen. Secondly, no one has ever offered me something like that - I really wholeheartedly think that this will be it.” If last night's show was it, the black metal band went out on a high note.
