Ah, road construction season! Repairs and updates are coming to a busy street downtown Grand Rapids and will continue through August. The project comes after Michigan's rejection of proposal 1 this past week, which would have raised sales tax to pay for road improvement.

WZZM-13 reports that repairs on Pearl Street by U.S. 131 are scheduled to start Monday, May 11, if the weather allows.

The pavement on Pearl Street will be removed and replaced. Additional work includes putting in new drainage systems, street lights, sidewalks, and ramps.

Crews plan to tackle the project in three phases.

Phase One:  Pearl Street in front of Burger King

Phase Two: Pearl Street under the 131 bridge

Phase Three: Pearl Street from Scribner Avenue to the Grand River

According to the City of Grand Rapids, the road will be closed to through traffic and detours will be clearly marked. Access to the 131 ramps will stay open.
