Nirvana Poke Fun at Conspiracy Theory Claiming Kurt Cobain Is Still Alive

Kurt Cobain‘s absence is still keenly felt in the musical community — and the hearts of the friends and loved ones he left behind after his 1994 passing — but we can still laugh at some of the more outlandish conspiracy theories surrounding the Nirvana frontman’s death and alleged afterlife. Case in point: a recent story published by a U.K. tabloid suggesting Cobain has been hiding out in South America for more than 20 years.

Without directly lending credence to the theory, the Daily Mail reported that “fans rushed to point out” the resemblance between Cobain and Peruvian performer Ramiro Saavedra after video surfaced of Saavedra performing Nirvana’s “Come As You Are.” You can check out the clip in question, which was taped during a talent show in 2012, above.

Whoever’s running the official Nirvana Facebook page decided to have a little fun with the report, posting a tongue-in-cheek update reading, “It is true, Kurt is alive. He needed time to learn to play the guitar with his right hand. Finding left-handed guitars is not easy. We are so happy to have him back and forgive him for all of the sadness that we have held so deeply in our hearts.” Naturally, a number of commenters failed to see the humor, with one disenchanted fan calling the post “stupid and disrespectful,” but others played along — another comment alluded to the constant speculation that Cobain was secretly killed by his wife Courtney Love, to which the admin responded, “There you go, more conspiracies!”

The truth behind the clip is, of course, far less exciting than theorists might wish to believe: as Consequence of Sound notes, Saavedra is a singer who’s worked as a professional Cobain impersonator. His other work, which you can check out here, includes covers of an array of acts that includes Incubus and Jon Bon Jovi.
