The National Lampoon name may not mean for comedy what it used to, but that didn’t stop Douglas Tirola from diving deep into history with documentary feature Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead: The Story of the National Lampoon. Now, we’ll get to see that history from another angle, as A+E Studios begins work on a scripted series adaptation.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead will be developed and produced with 4th Row Films, with no network yet attached. National Lampoon co-founder Matty Simmons will serve as consulting producer.

Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead originally premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, chronicling early times of the magazine, which was created from an Ivy League school by Douglas Kenney and Henry Beard. The publication became a vast media company with stage shows, radio and major comedy movies like Animal House and Vacation. The subject material will also give rise to David Wain’s star-studded biopic, A Futile & Stupid Gesture.

A+E Studios have begun looking into potential showrunners for the drama, while you can watch the original documentary trailer below.
