Muskegon High School and Middle School were both on a "soft lockdown" Monday following threats from a person posing as a creepy clown on social media, WZZM-13 reports.

The issue in Muskegon comes after a rash of creepy clown sightings across the country, including a sighting in Big Rapids last week.

The threats came from a person going by "John Clown", who posted statements like:

"No one is safe" and "We'll visit a couple of public schools", along with a picture of Muskegon High School.

School administrators contacted police. The soft lockdown, which means extra security with more police presence and locked doors, lasted until about 10a.m. Monday.

While there have been no actual sightings of creepy clowns, school administrators and police are taking the threats seriously.

Superintendent John Felske told WZZM-13,

It's concerning that someone on a Facebook page... is making threats about children. We are going to work with police to maximize whatever we can do to reduce those happening in the future. If there is an opportunity to prosecute, we'll prosecute to the max."

Anyone with information or who sees something suspicious should contact the Muskegon Police Department at 231-724-6750 or Silent Observer at 231-722-7463.
