A gunman opened fire in a German movie theater on Thursday, according to Reuters.

The gunman has been reportedly been shot and killed by the police, according to Peter Beuth, the state interior minister of Hesse, via the Atlantic. The masked gunman reportedly entered the movie theater Kinopolis in Viernheim, Germany, south of Frankfurt, around 3:00 p.m. local time with an ammunition belt and a weapon. The man reportedly fired his weapon into the air once he entered the theater.

Beuth said, “There were hostages inside and there was a struggle (with police) until in the end he was dead,” according to Yahoo. Authorities added that they have no information about the man’s identity or motive, however adding that there was “no link to terrorism.” The Guardian is reporting that German security services believe the gunman to be a “confused individual” rather than a terrorist.

Beuth added that there’s no information as to whether anyone else was injured. Initial reports said that up to 50 people were injured, but Reuters is reporting that 25 people may have been wounded from exposure to tear gas used by the gunman.

During a press conference on Thursday, the New York Police Department announced that in response to the shooting in Germany, units are being sent to theaters across New York City. “In response to a terrorism incident anywhere in the world, we will immediately err on the side of caution by ramping up our police presence at similar locations,” Bratton said. “So at this moment we are in fact doing that around the city at major movie locations.” NYPD Deputy Commissioner for Counterterrorism and Intelligence John Miller added that there no known threats to NYC at the time.

This is a developing story. We will update this post as more reports come in.
