Michigan State Police are investigating a shooting involving an officer in Montcalm County, WZZM-13 reports.

The incident occurred Friday night at a residence on Townline Road, just east of Lakeview. Police were executing an arrest warrant for assault when the suspect began firing at officers with a crossbow. A Montcalm County deputy was stuck in the side.

Police returned fire, hitting the suspect at least once. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

WOOD-TV8 reports that family members have identified the man as 40-year-old Travis Quay.

According to next-door neighbor Kevin Schultz the incident began earlier in the day over a dispute involving missing marijuana plants. It is alleged that Quay accused his neighbors of theft and became violent, prompting the call to police.

Investigators report that the deputy was flown by helicopter to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital, where he is in stable condition.
