President-elect Donald Trump has named West Michigan's Betsy DeVos as his choice for Education Secretary.

DeVos is a long-time donor to the Republican party. She has served as chair of the Michigan Republican Party and on the board of several other organizations. She is currently chair of the American Federation for Children. Their website says they are the "leading national advocacy organization promoting school choice, with a specific focus on advocating for school vouchers, scholarship tax credit programs and Education Savings Accounts."

DeVos has a history of support for the arts, school choice and school vouchers.

Trump's choice must be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

DeVos shared her excitement on Twitter, tweeting for the first time since Sept. 23, 2014.

Michigan and the entire country are reacting to the selection.

Gov. Rick Snyder issued this statement:

I compliment President-elect Trump for his selection of Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education. Michiganders know the passion Betsy has for reforming education in a way that puts kids first. Betsy’s appointment will mean great things for Michigan and for children around the nation as she takes her no-nonsense commitment to empowering parents to the highest levels in Washington."

The Michigan Democratic Party issued this statement:

“Donald Trump could not have made a more dangerous and ill-advised pick for his Secretary of Education than billionaire charter school advocate and anti-public education activist Betsy DeVos,” said Brandon Dillon, Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party.

“Here is someone, in Betsy DeVos, who has made it her life’s work to channel her family’s massive wealth toward destroying Michigan’s public education system, and now she’s about to oversee the policy and direction of education for the entire United States. She has consistently encouraged and enabled attacks on public school teachers and our children’s right to a quality public education, to line the pockets of corporate charter school investors and make her family’s extremely conservative views part of a mainstream curriculum.

"Mr. Trump has made yet another ill-informed and dangerous cabinet appointment, either to reward and appease another wealthy Republican power player or because he simply has no clue at all what he’s doing. In either case, he is putting our entire public education system in harm’s way and should immediately rescind the appointment of Betsy DeVos as the next U.S. Secretary of Education.”

Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette issued a statement:

Betsy DeVos is a tremendous choice for Secretary of Education. Her commitment to education options and choices for parents and their children is top shelf. Her appointment is a ray of hope for providing educational opportunity for America's children."

Progress Michigan Executive Director Lonnie Scott said:

Donald Trump’s pick of Betsy DeVos for Secretary of Education proves that having a shortage of experience means nothing as long you don’t have a shortage of money. The DeVos family has been using their deep pockets to influence the Michigan legislature for years and it looks like they have finally bought their way into a presidential administration as well. The DeVos family education plan has been a disaster for Michigan and we are truly saddened that Trump decided to import their failed ideas to Washington D.C. Progress Michigan remains committed to holding the DeVos family accountable and fighting for all children to have access to excellent public schools.”
