Earlier this month, three teenagers admitted to vandalizing the Lacota Cemetery in Geneva Township. Over thirty headstones were damaged or tipped over at the 175-year-old cemetery on Baseline Road.

Geneva Township man, Craig Gentry, and a few other guys got together to repair the headstones at the cemetery; Gentry says he's been told to stop trying to fix the vandalism by the township, Fox 17 reports.

According to Gentry, the cemetery was left in disrepair after the vandalism for three weeks. He and the other men decided to step in and help.

Genty said he got a call from the sheriff's department saying they'd received complaints from Geneva Township and that the township they did not want the men in the cemetery. Board members took out an ad in the newspaper alerting residents that they'd prosecute vandals and anyone who repaired the headstones too.

Gentry told Fox 17 that the men never meant to cause any problems.

"The community appreciates this. I would appreciate this. You know if I had loved ones here, I'd appreciate somebody stepping in to get this stuff fixed up. But it's clearly the board, " Gentry said.

Nancy Whaley, Geneva Township supervisor said they planned to repair the headstones from the beginning and have already hired a company out of Benton Harbor to do the work.
