The decade of documentation that went into Netflix’s Making a Murderer presents a challenge following up anytime soon, but new developments in the cases of Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey may yet bring directors Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos back to work. A breaking upset may yet see an official Making a Murderer Season 2 update as early as March, according to reports.

Take this all with a grain of salt for the moment, as both Ricciardi and Demos have previously spoken to additional conversations with Avery taking place, though not necessarily for an official Season 2. That said, the two spoke to Variety at the New York’s IFC Center this past week on Avery’s new lawyer, Kathleen Zellner, who may succeed in expediting new trials for the alleged killers:

From our perspective this story is obviously not over. It’s real life and (Avery’s and Brendan Dassey’s) cases are both still pending. We have no idea when the magistrate will make a decision in Brendan’s case. We do know that two potential outcomes are that the judge could order Brendan’s release or he could order a new trial. So we are on the edge of seats about that. To the extent that there are significant developments, we would like to continue documenting this (case).

Zellner has a track record of overturning wrongful convictions, and Manitowoc County’s Clerk of Circuit Court should process Avery’s appeal request for a new trial by March’s end, but how might the filmmakers work on a followup? Could there be a one-off special, or new episodes?
