How about a nice little Star Wars rumor to start the weekend? The Last Jedi comes out in a little more than six months from now, and while we know pretty much nothing about the plot, that won’t stop us from speculating about every new prop the cast might be carrying in this movie! Apparently, Luke Skywalker does have some gear with him besides those five books in his cave, and one of these items is particularly intriguing.

[This post ventures into potential Last Jedi SPOILER territory. You’ve been warned.]

The folks at Making Star Wars have the scoop: On the planet Ahch-To (gesundheit) on which Luke has exiled himself, he carries a backpack and an electrified walking stick that helps him clear away little creatures in his path. He also has with him a very cool-sounding space compass:

In Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Luke Skywalker has a compass that guides his way. The compass is a box with a blue marble-like orb on the top. I believe Luke Skywalker moves his hand over the blue orb and the box opens up to reveal the compass inside the box. The interior of the box has metallic dials with Aurebesh writing inside denoting some “space” version of North, South, East, and West with a needle to point the way. The prop is probably the most beautiful piece of craftsmanship I can think of for a Star Wars film. It has a very old look to it but the inside is almost steampunk or like something mystical from Naboo.

It sounds cool, but I can’t even imagine what it could be used for. Has he been searching for something on Ahch-To all these years, and only now finally has someone else with him to help him find it? Is there something mysterious about the planet himself he’s trying to figure out?

Making Star Wars also has some slightly more spoilery information (if it’s true) on Rey and Luke’s respective quests, and the possibility of them going after different villains at the end of the movie.

While the stuff above is empirical evidence, this is less so. There is a rumor that near the end of the film, Luke is going for Snoke and Rey is going for Kylo. I asked the person that believes this to be true if they have an encounter in the film and they didn’t know for sure. It makes me wonder if we leave off the circumstances of the film with Luke going to embrace that he’s a Jedi again and he’s intent on bringing Snoke and the First Order down? If that’s the case, I wonder what makes him change from being the reluctant master to the Jedi he was supposed to be? The possibilities are fascinating. This part could be entirely wrong though, but I find the potential very cool.

This could be really cool, and it would make a lot of sense. As soon as Luke is done training Rey and has come to his senses about being a Jedi again, it stands to reason that he’d go after the big boss. And Rey and Kylo are going to have an epic showdown, you can count on that.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens December 15.
