Kris Jenkins made a three-point shot at the buzzer to lift Villanova over North Carolina, 77-74, in the NCAA men’s basketball national championship game in Houston on Monday night. Jenkins’ game-winning shot gave the Wildcats (35-5) their first national title since 1985.

Trailing by as much as 10 points late in the second half, the Tar Heels (33-7) rallied to tie the game at 74 on Marcus Paige’s double-clutch, three-point shot with 4.7 seconds left.

However, ‘Nova and Jenkins had the final possession, which was just long enough for them to secure the win.

North Carolina had a 39-34 halftime lead before Villanova thundered back in the final 20 minutes. A Mikal Bridges’ dunk tied the game at 44 for the Wildcats with 14 minutes to play. They never trailed again, leading 67-57 with five minutes to play when Carolina mounted their own comeback.

Phil Booth scored 20 points to lead Villanova. Fellow guard Ryan Arcidiacono, who was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, tallied 16 points. Jenkins finished with 14, and Josh Hart had 12 with eight rebounds.

Paige had 21 and Joel Berry II had 20 for the Tar Heels.
