Korn’s Brian ‘Head’ Welch Talks ‘A Different World’ + Corey Taylor’s Initial Recording Blooper

If you’re a Korn fan, you may have already heard the nu-metal pioneers’ new track featuring Slipknot’s Corey Taylor, “A Different World.” We had a chance to speak with Korn’s Brian ‘Head’ Welch about the cut, along with the process of recording it with Taylor.

Korn unleashed a dark animated video for “A Different World” last week, bringing that signature Korn creepiness to the Serenity of Suffering single. Corey’s voice blends in beautifully with that of Jonathan Davis, but Korn simply wanted Taylor to come in and “do his thing” instead of assimilating to Korn’s style.

“Everyone knows he’s really talented and the guy just has lyrics leaking out of him for days,” says Head. “We all just sat back and listened and gave our opinions and what we could add.” After Corey tried out a bunch of techniques for the song’s chorus, Welch personally encouraged Corey to sing it in the style which made the final edit. As for the bridge, however, it was Slipknot’s ‘Great Big Mouth’ who took control.

“The bridge… no one had to say nothing. He wrote that,” Welch raves. The guitarist originally thought Taylor was screaming “Order! Order!” instead of “Harder! Harder!” “At first he said, ‘Give it to me harder, harder!’ And then he’s like, ‘I’d better not say that. That’s kind of weird,’” Head laughs. The final line ended up being, “Harder! Harder! Harder! / Give it to you /Harder! Harder!”
