The California Assembly passed a bill that requires history classes and textbooks to include the contribution of gays, lesbians, and transgender Americans.  The thought is that this inclusion would reduce the amount of bullying of gay students.

The bill has spurred a heated debate in the assembly.  Two openly gay Democratic members of the assembly (Assembly Speaker John A. Perez and Assemblyman Tom Ammiano) have spoke out for the measure, both giving personal pleas for the bills ratification.

Several Republicans have spoken out against the bill, including Assemblyman Tim Donnelly, who argues that it promotes a "homosexual agenda".
