Today, Janna and I got to talk with Josh Klinghoffer about the new Red Hot Chili Peppers album, The Getaway, how the songs came to be, the recording process, touring, and more!

Talking about the recording process with Brian "Danger Mouse", and almost starting over from scratch with the writing of the songs:

"It went well. That's just Brian's production method. He sort of like to join the band, kind of, for lack of a better way to put it. So he just kind of comes in and really wants to be part of the writing process, and really be with the songs that he's producing from the ground up."

On what the band wants to do with all the songs they'd written before Brian came in and they wrote all new tracks:

"If it were up to me, we'd be in the studio now, working on them, or we would do it on our first available break, which I think is in August. But, I don't know. The last time, when we did "I'm With You" record, we sort of recorded everything we had, or most of what we had, which wound up being about 50 songs. And we hadn't really cleared the smoke away and decided what songs should be on the album. So we wound up with this massive batch, and I don't know if that was a good thing."

On how the first single, "Dark Necessities" came about in the studio:

"That was one of the ones we did with Brian. I don't even remember the moment it was born. I feel like I arrived and he and Chad had been working on a drum pattern or something. To be honest, I don't exactly remember how it was born. It either was born out of a drum pattern and then Flea went on top of that with those piano chords, or the other way around."

The new album is out now, go get it to hear what Josh is talking about!
