At first I was all, "Oh, Wednesday is April 1st. Cool. That means we're getting even closer to summer!"

Then I remembered, "Crap. It's April Fools' Day. The day everyone thinks they're super funny and the best pranksters on the planet. No thank you."

John Oliver is with me.

Even though HBO's Last Week Tonight isn't airing this week, host John Oliver decided to make a special video on a very serious topic: April Fools' Day.

Oliver pretty much sums it up in one sentence:

April Fools' Day is to comedy as St. Patrick's Day is to Irish Culture."

Although, I do greatly enjoy St. Patty's Day, solely because of the extreme amount of alcohol consumed on the holiday.

Maybe if April Fools' Day incorporated adult beverages, instead of just people who aren't funny trying desperately to be funny, I'd be into it.

Oliver shares several good reasons the holiday is awful, among them:  fake pregnancy Facebook posts, death hoaxes, and that people excited for April Fools' Day are most likely sociopaths who are just sitting around thinking "I cannot wait to hurt the people close to me".

As Oliver points out, we don't need a special holiday to disappoint our loved ones, we basically do that every other holiday anyway.

I strongly urge you to join me in the Last Week Tonight "No Prank Pledge":

"I will not play any practical jokes and if I see someone planning a prank I will say to them, 'Hey, you're being a dick right now. Stop being a dick.'"
