Ionia State Prison Escapee Caught in Northern Indiana [Video]

Michigan Department of Corrections

A convicted murderer who escaped late Sunday from the Ionia Correctional Facility has been caught in northern Indiana, authorities said Monday night.

Michael David Elliott, a 40-year-old serving a life sentence on four counts of murder, was caught in LaPorte, Ind., about 5:30 p.m. CDT Monday evening, the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office said.

Elliott is now being held at the LaPorte County Jail, where he was booked at 6:29 p.m. CDT without bond in LaPorte.

He was stopped in a reportedly stolen 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo in rural LaPorte using Stop Sticks, according to the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office. As he attempted to flee, he was taken into custody.

There were no injuries in the arrest, authorities said.

Besides escape charges and other criminal counts in Michigan, Elliott is facing felonies of motor vehicle theft and resisting law enforcement.

Sheriff Michael Mollenhauer credited the observation skills of Deputy Slawek Czupryna in spotting the stolen vehicle that Elliott was driving.

The Ionia Department of Public Safety and Michigan State Police issued an bulletin about Elliott’s at-large whereabouts after his escape.

After escaping the prison, Elliot reportedly abducted a woman and drove with her to Indiana.

The Michigan Department of Corrections said that Elliot kidnapped the woman using a knife or box cutter, then drove with her to Elkhart County, Ind., and stopped for gas, WZZM-13 reported.

The woman was able to escape from Elliot at the gas station, with Elliott leaving. At the time, he was reportedly driving a 2004 Jeep Liberty.
