GVSU’s All Time Leading Rusher Shot In Indiana

The Laker Nation today is praying for one of its own.

Martayveus 'Marty' Carter was shot and critically injured late Saturday in his hometown of East Chicago, Indiana.

Carter was in a car at a gas station in East Chicago when the back window was shot out by unknown assailants, injuring Carter and killing another passenger in the car, Brian Thomas of Hammond IN.

East Chicago Police told the Northwest Indiana Times that the assailants were still at large and the case in still under investigation. Carter is currently in critical condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, IL.

GVSU Coach Matt Mitchell told the NWI Times, "It's devastating. He was a good person at heart. He had some highs and some lows. My heart goes out to his family and what they're going through right now."

"He and his family, his parents, were part of our program. His teammates have been exchanging text messages. They're worried about him right now."

Carter is the father of two small children.

Carter was one semester away from graduating at GVSU before taking some time off to try and make a NFL roster this coming season. He had worked out for at least one team, and was planning on getting some more tryouts in the weeks to come.

"He was very motivated by the dream of playing in the NFL," Mitchell also told the NWI Times. "He was a ferocious competitor when he was carrying the ball."

Carter played running back at GVSU from 2014-17 and is their all time leading rusher. In the 2016 season, he led all rushers in NCAA Division II with 1908 yards and 20 touchdowns.

His family has dealt with trauma before. His mother was seriously injured in a car-pedestrian accident, and his uncle, a football star in the '80s in California, was shot and killed by a skinhead.
