After finding life beyond just a CD or digital download as a hit Broadway production, Green Day's American Idiot concept album will now be adapted into a feature film. And who better to play the lead role of St. Jimmy than the man who created him: Green Day lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong.

The Hollywood Reporter, um, reports that Tom Hanks' Playtone Productions will handle the movie version of American Idiot, which is scheduled to be released in 2013. Playtone is no stranger to musicals, as they were behind the film version of Mamma Mia!, a $600 million worldwide smash.

Mamma Mia! proved that if the musical is right, obviously it can go into the stratosphere, as far as box office gross. We’re always looking for musicals,” said Playtone partner Gary Goetzman.

"Maybe there will be three musicals a year, maybe five," added Goetzman. "I think that’s important otherwise we’d just have this tentpole mentality where if it’s not based on a comic book or cost $200 million, you're stacked in like pillars. We need all these genres to be respected and we need the studios not to be afraid of them.”
