Around 2:20p.m. on Monday two kids were walking on sidewalk near Alpine Avenue NW and Sylvia Street, near Richmond Park.

Police say a man approached them and attempted to get the children into his truck.

The kids, a 13-year-old boy, and a 10-year-old girl were walking their dog when the man pulled up in a white pick-up truck. He asked them several questions and told them to get in his vehicle.

The kids ran away and called 911.

Police say the children were prepared, and did the right thing to get away and get safe.

Grand Rapids Police Sgt Terry Dixon said,

"This goes back prior to what they'd been taught at an even younger age. You have to understand what a stranger is, who is a safe stranger, who is not. Someone like a teacher or a police officer, that would be a safe stranger In this case, the individuals recognized that this was not a safe stranger. They did the right thing in running away and sought safety from a safe stranger. "

Police are looking for:

  • White man, between 55-65, white hair, white spots on face, heavy set, dark eyes
  • Driving an older white pickup, with rust along the bottom

Anyone with information about this man should contact the Grand Rapids Police Department at 616-456-3427 or Silent Observer at 616-774-2345.
