The Grand Rapids Griffins made a valiant effort for the Calder Cup in 2015, making it to the Western Conference Finals, just two years after winning it all.

The efforts of head coach Jeff Blashill have not been unnoticed by the Detroit Red Wings.

After Mike Babcock's decade long tenure, and recent departure to coach the Toronto Maple Leafs, it is looking like Blashill, former Red Wing's assistant coach, will take over as head coach of the Red Wings, the Detroit Free Press reports.

On June 3, the Detroit Free Press predicted that by the middle of next week, Blashill would be announced as the new head coach for the Red Wings, saying he has been "the heir apparent all along... but the Wings weren't going to make that official while Blashill was still busy coaching the AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids."
