Goats Return to Kill Invasive Species in Ottawa County
Ottawa County has again decided to use adorable four-legged friends to help control invasive plant species in their parks.
The Ottawa County Parks and Recreation Department has brought in a herd of goats to Bur Oak Landing to help get rid of Oriental bittersweet, honeysuckle, autumn olive, multi-flora rose and bucktorn, according to a release from the county.
The project is also working with the Ottawa Area Intermediate School District’s Careerline Tech and Agricultural and Environmental Science Program. The students and advisors from the program will be monitoring the health of the goats throughout the summer.
Residents are more than welcome to watch the goats, but the county is asking that people do not touch them and also stay away from the electric fence surrounding the goats.
Two other county parks will also be using goats for assistance: Riverside Park and Eastmanville Bayou.
