Survival Horror is one of my favorite video game genres of all time. The anticipation, story, and the looming fear around every corner just attracts me to this genre more than any other game genre out there. My first Survival Horror experience was the original Resident Evil, and after that, I was stuck on getting scared.

Here is a quick list of games that I feel as though that if you are looking for scares, these are good ones to start with.

  • Resident Evil (Gamecube)

This is honestly one of the scariest games of all time. It took me awhile to get through this game because it would take some effort to power on my Gamecube to play it because I knew that it was that terrifying.

This a re-make of the original Resident Evil on PSX. Fans VERY RARELY ever get a remake to a fan favorite game, and when Capcom decided to do this, man, did they hit the ball out of the park with it.

The improved graphics of this game just made this game. The game looks amazing! So amazing that they are remastering it for current gen consoles. It's a slow moving game, where you have to search everything, but it's that type of game play that amps up the horror of this game. You can't just turn around and claim a head shot. You either have to run or get killed, your choice.

    Silent Hill (PSX)

Considered by many as the scariest game of all time, Silent Hill is well worth that honor. Resident Evil kind of started people in the right direction on the PSX, but when Silent Hill hit shelves, it was a game not to be messed with.

The foggy atmosphere, the silence of the school, pure darkness everywhere, and a town that is shrouded in death is pure survival horror. One of the most horrifying parts of this game? The freakin' school! Base a haunted house around a elementary school...guaranteed terror!

Strangely enough, one of the more scary things was the puzzle solving. There was a lot of puzzles in this game which usually were set in an area that was quiet, which amped the terror even more!

To round it up though, the only way you knew an enemy was in the area, was the static that emitted from a radio attached to you pocket. You don't know where they are coming from or what direction, all you know is that there is something hidden in the fog.

    Alan Wake (Xbox 360)

Who needs blood in order to make a scary game? Sometimes a creepy wooded town is exactly what you need. Add a really good narrative, and you have survival horror gold.

This game plays out like a good thrilling book and seems very reminiscent of like a Stephen King television special. Alan Wake has good control and is overall just a very creepy game. From the voices in the distance of Taken coming after you with pitch forks and knives, to the 'darkness' throwing trucks at you! There are times in this game that give you a sense of desperation, and that is when you are trying to get to a lit area. The light is something you are always striving for in this game, so finding a traffic light or lamp gives you a sense of calm in a game that is filled with pandemonium.

Just running through the woods what something that gave you a sense of loneliness. When you finally ran into another human being that wasn't taken, relief set in. Just wait until you get to the trailer park...oh man...

    Dead Space

I will admit, I have not played much of this game. However from what I have played, this game was insane. When a game prompts you to...

    'Run for Your Life'

Well, then you have something special there! From the chilling atmosphere, the loneliness of space, and being basically on your own, this game is what an 'Alien' game should be! Plus you can't just shoot your enemies and expect them to go down. You have to take out their legs and hope that they stay down.

Like I said, I haven't played much of this game, but damn...it was scary.

    Condemned 2: Bloodshot

This game seems like it was long forgotten, and I don't know if you'd consider it survival horror, but it sure felt like it.

The first one was quite scary, but the second one hit a nerve. You don't have to look much further in this game than the abandoned doll manufacturer. I know, it's a little cliche' but those little dolls were scary as eff'! Along with that, when the Knight came to life and chased after you, that was some intense stuff! You think you were far from him, but then you'd hear the clatter of that armor and you were running for you life!

I wish they would make a Condemned 3, but chances of that happening are pretty slim to none.
