On Thursday, I had the honor of getting to talk with Dave Mustaine of Megadeth, in celebration of the release of the band's 15th album, Dystopia. Dave was great to talk with, and has a lot of great stories, and fun things that happened around the recording of the new album.

Dave and Megadeth have been really good at jumping into new technology, having built one of the earliest band websites, Megadeth Arizona, and they utilized Pledgemusic in the process of creating the new album. Dave has also been pretty active on Periscope:

I'm a very mad emoter. I've shared my feelings quite a lot when I probably shouldn't. That's what I need. I need a Mustaine embargo on my Periscope! Hahaha!

We talked a lot about the new album, and the new band members, Chris Adler from Lamb of God, and Kiko Loureiro, formerly of Brazilian metallers Angra.

When Chris Adler came into the band and started saying things like "my Megadeth sounds like this", and "this is what MY Megadeth sounds like", it really made Dave cherish the beast he created:

It just made everything kind of become really valuable feeling to me at the time. When you get to this point, and you have someone you really respect give you accolates, it's great!

Dave learned a lot about Chris Adler, like how much Chris had been totally influenced by original Megadeth drummer Gar Samuelson. Dave took that, and decided to challenge Chris on the new album with some crazy drum fills:

I had, I gotta tell you, one of the best cries during this record, laughing at Chris trying to do one drum fill, because I know how to write drum parts but I can't really play 'em. So I wrote this part for him, I can sing it right now, DUHDUHDIDADLDLDLDDLDUDALOO, you know, a bunch of shuffling hand stuff. Like a Buddy Rich kind of a thing.

And he tried, and couldn't do it. He's this really cool Southern Gentleman, and he goes, "Damn. Shit. Fuck! God Dammit!" And he just starts swearing. I know you'll have to beep all this out, but he started getting soo mad, because he just couldn't. And I'm laughing, and laughing, and laughing.

Towards the very end of the session, he was kind of mad, and said, "I'm sorry." And I said, "Dude, you have nothing to be sorry about, I got to teach you something today. I'm really proud! You're so great, I never thought I'd ever be able to teach you ANYTHING!"

Dave is also really excited about the skills of Kiko Loureiro, the new guitar player in Megadeth. Kiko added some parts to the final songs being written, and then lay down some amazing solos.

His soloing was so effortless. He's mindblowing! He knows so many different styles, too! Classical, Spanish, Flamenco, Bossa Nova, Jazz, Rock, Blues...

Check out the full interview above for more, and go get the new album, Dystopia, in stores now!

Thank you, Dave, for being really cool to talk with, and for making so much amazing music!
