Ousted drummer Dave Lombardo doesn’t ever foresee a return to Slayer. This news shouldn’t shock the fans who have been following (or have been bummed out by) the drama surrounding Lombardo’s most recent exit from the band. Things have been acrimonious and messy, with private details about financials and other business and personal issues becoming public knowledge.
The kit minder spoke about his long and complicated relationship with the band during a recent chat with Radio Screamer (posted above), pointing out that he has had three tenures that seem to come around every 10 years.
The skinsman was asked what keeps bringing him back, but he was quick to point out that there likely won’t be another return in the next nine years, and a fourth stint behind the kit is looking less and less likely.
“Oh, well, I don’t think that’s ever gonna happen again,” he said. “Well, the reason why, I mean, time passed. It was 10 years. When I returned in 2001, it had been already 10 years that I was out of the band, and it felt like it was the right time. It was water under the bridge. We didn’t have any grudges, but apparently, that really wasn’t the case, because later I find out that, ‘Oh, well, he left in ’92, so just get him out again.'”
Lombardo first joined Slayer when he was 16, so there is a lot of time, life and history there. “You trust people and you don’t want to think twice,” he said, addressing the business matters that have become problematic. He added that there is no drawn-out legal battle but states, “I really don’t wanna get into the details. I take this departure like any other change in life. You just go with it. I, luckily, had a band that I had put back together before this whole thing went down with Slayer. And you just move forward. You don’t look back.”
