Update: In a statement released to Rolling Stone, the band confirmed that they were approached to be the first ever rock band to play at the Emmys by the Television Academy, but Fox Television ultimately pulled the plug on their appearance. "The band and the Academy were extremely happy and excited to have Foo Fighters play as the first-ever rock band on the Emmys. Fox then refused to allow the band to play a full song from the Emmy-winning Sonic Highways," a rep for the Foos said. "That is why the band decided not to perform." TMZ adds that Fox insisted that the Foos play a partial song from 'Sonic Highways' followed by a portion of their hit "Learn to Fly."

Foo Fighters had a good start to their Emmy experience, taking home two Emmys last week during the Creative Arts portion of the Emmys, but according to Dave Grohl there was more in the works that didn't actually happen.

TMZ caught up with Dave Grohl on the streets on Los Angeles and asked him why he wasn't attending the Emmys last night (Sept. 20). "We were supposed to play on the Emmys and we were gonna play on the Emmys and then they kicked us off," stated Grohl. When asked to expand upon his comment, Grohl offered, "I can't tell you, do your research, but they did." See his comments speaking with TMZ in the player above.

What was at the root of the Foo Fighters being cut? Was it just simply a creative decision due to the length of the three hour-plus show or was there something more to it? The official story has yet to be revealed. However, at the end of the interview, Grohl was asked if he would consider playing if asked again next year to which he responded with a smile, "I'll do anything."

Foo Fighters won Emmys for Outstanding Sound Editing for Nonfiction Programming and Outstanding Sound Mixing for Nonfiction Programming for their HBO documentary series Sonic Highways.

Back in June, Grohl stated that there would be a second season of Sonic Highways, but teased that it could be any number of formats. The band is currently on the road touring in support of their album of the same name. Dates can be found here.
