Chemical Fumes Released at GR Plant – Neighbors Being Told to Stay Inside
Crews from the Grand Rapids Fire Department have issued a shelter in place order for neighboring businesses following a chemical release on the northwest side.
The HAZMAT situation happened around 1 p.m. Tuesday at Haviland Enterprises, near Turner Avenue and Ann Street.
WZZM-13 reports that an oxidizer reaction occurred, sending a chemical plume in the air. These are the same pool chemicals involved in a similar situation back in September.
Crews say that the reaction is under control and no injuries have been reported.
Police have closed Turner Avenue from Ann Street to Edwin as a precaution, as well as the Ann Street exit from U.S. 131.
