Weather Alert: It’s Still Winter [Video]

The arctic blast gripping Grand Rapids and West Michigan is expected to loosen today, according to the National Weather Service's Grand Rapids Office and WZZM-TV, Channel 13.

The temperature reached a high of 8 degrees and a low a minus-1 degree Tuesday, with wind chills as low a 20 degrees-plus below zero at Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids.

Arctic Grip: Snow, Winds and Cold Combine for Sub-Zero Climes, Dangerous Conditions [Video]

The arctic blast is going to continue its grip on Grand Rapids and West Michigan through Wednesday, the National Weather Service’s Grand Rapids office said Monday afternoon.

Snow and windy conditions are creating near-blizzard conditions and sub-zero temperatures with wind chills in the minus-20 degree range with a winter storm advisory across greater Grand Rapids and West Michigan. Highs are only expected to reach the single digits up to 10 degrees.

Whitecaps After Fifth Third Ballpark Fire: ‘They Will Come Again’ [Video]

The West Michigan Whitecaps' ownership expects to rebuild Fifth Third Ballpark in the wake of a Friday blaze that damaged the Comstock Park facility.

A space heater started a small blaze Friday morning at the ballpark, but workers believed they had put it out. They returned to find the space in flames, Plainfield Township Fire Chief David Peterson said.

Fifth Third Ballpark is the home of the Midwest League Class A professional baseball team. It is slated to host the 50th Midwest League All-Star Game on June 17, 2014.

Team officials expect the Whitecaps to play the 2014 season, host the all-star game and rebuild the ballpark.

Fifth Third Ballpark Fire [Video Link]

UPDATE (2:50pm): In a news conference held Friday afternoon, West Michigan Whitecaps Managing Partner Denny Baxter shed some light on the fire and on the future of Fifth Third Ballpark and the West Michigan Whitecaps. He said of the future: "If we rebuild it, they will come once again." Baxter assured the community that the Whitecaps will be playing baseball come April 8th of this year (opening day). He got choked up several times during the news conference, and expressed that the Whitecaps organization is "more than a business, it's a community member."

Progress Made on Outages in Greater Grand Rapids and Across Michigan [Video]

Saturday afternoon update: Restoration work continues for Consumers Energy customers impacted by last weekend’s devastating ice storm and those affected by ice melting off trees and equipment from Friday’s and today’s warmer weather.

As of 11:30 a.m. Saturday, about 18,000 Consumers Energy customers remained without service, including 3,667 in Barry County and 468 in Ionia County. Since noon Dec. 21, the storm has caused 409,000 outages, or about 23 percent of the utility’s 1.8 million electric customers.

Consumers Energy Fixing Power Outages in Greater Grand Rapids, West Michigan

This will remembered as the Christmas without power for many.

FRIDAY MORNING UPDATE: As of 4:30 a.m. Friday, 52,000 Consumers Energy customers were without electricity. Since noon Saturday, the winter storm caused more than 377,000 outages across Michigan.

Among the counties most affected by the outages still are Kent, with 313 customers without power; Barry, 6,754; Ionia, 1,909; Kalamazoo, 187; and Calhoun, 739.

Power Restoration Continues in Greater Grand Rapids, West Michigan [Video]

Despite some extra efforts, Christmas is a powerless holiday for many in greater Grand Rapids and across West Michigan because of snow, cold and the lingering effects of a weekend ice storm, officials said Tuesday.

More than 152,000 electricity customers of Consumers Energy were without power headed into Tuesday evening.

More than 70,000 Without Electricity in Grand Rapids and West Michigan

As of noon today, more than 285,000 Consumers Energy customers statewide were without power caused by a snow and ice storm over the weekend.

That includes nearly 70,000 in Grand Rapids and West Michigan, according to the Jackson, Mich.-based utility.
