Gov. Snyder: Marriages Were Legal, But Michigan Will Not Recognize Them Unless Stay Is Lifted [Video]

Michigan will not recognize the more than 300 same-sex marriages performed last weekend (though the marriages were performed legally at the time) before a court halted a decision that opened the door to gay marriage, Gov. Rick Snyder said Wednesday.

The announcement was made just a day after an appeals court  stopped any additional same-sex marriages while it reviews the decision that struck down a 2004 Michigan law that states that marriage only is between a man and a woman.

Michigan’s Gay Marriage Ban Struck Down by Federal Judge

Michigan's 10-year-old ban on gay marriage was ruled unconstitutional, a federal judge determined today.

U.S. District Judge Bernard Friedman's ruling said the ban violates the U.S. Constitution's Equal Protection Clause in the 14th Amendment.

Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette promptly filed an emergency request seeking to set aside Friedman's ruling. Michigan law currently defines a marriage as the union between one man and one woman

Western Michigan University Student from Allendale Found Dead in Her Residence

A 19-year-old student from Allendale was found dead this morning in her Western Michigan University residence hall room in Kalamazoo, WMU officials said today.

The WMU student was identified as Alyssa Olafson, a freshman majoring in pre-health and human services and a 2013 graduate of Allendale High School. She had made the dean's list her first semester last fall.
