According to Kotaku, Bethesda is working on a new version of Doom 4. What the heck happened to the old Doom 4?

Supposedly, the Doom 4 project was rebooted in late 2011. The version in development, “did not exhibit the quality and excitement that id and Bethesda intend to deliver and that Doom fans worldwide expect.”

Currently, all Id staff are working on the new Doom 4 project. Unfortunately, this does mean that Rage 2, the followup to Id’s tepid release of Rage, has been canceled. In addition, the Id team has seriously scaled back plans for Rage DLC. Unfortunately, Rage did not meet its sales expectations following its release. While Bethesda has not said that the IP is being abandoned, its future looks murky indeed.

Bethesda was not yet ready to talk about specific details regarding the Doom 4 project, but has assured us that they will have a full update ready soon. We will likely hear more about the project as we head toward E3 this year.
