The Beastie Boys want the lawsuit laid at their doorstep by Trouble Funk dropped. The go-go band claims that the group illegally utilized samples from their music on ‘Licensed to Ill’ and ‘Paul’s Boutique,’ which were the Beasties’ first two records. The Beasties, on the other hand, think Trouble Funk are full of it and grasping at straws.

TufAmerica, Trouble Funk’s label, filed suit back in May, right before the death of Adam Yauch, aka MCA, who was a founding member of the hip-hop trio. His passing delayed the suit, which claims copyright infringement, unjust enrichment and misappropriation. A permanent injunction on the sale of the records with the samples and punitive damages are being sought.

According to Rolling Stone, the Beasties aren’t just laying down and taking it. They claim that there is no substantial similarity between their songs and those of Trouble Funk. They also note that more than 20 years passed between the release of the records and the filing of the suit, so they question why the timing of the legal action.

Looks like this is one is a matter for the courts to hash out.
