A barn fire that started in Ionia County killed nearly a dozen horses.

According to WOOD TV, the fire broke out just before midnight Wednesday in a barn located in the 7200 block of Sayles Road near Hawley Highway in Keene Township, north of Saranac.

The horses that were kept in the barn had been put away for the night and unable to reach the outdoors once the blaze started.

Unfortunately when the fire department arrived the barn was already fully engulfed in flames.

The 10 veteran horses that had been living in the barn were used for breeding and unfortunately did not make the blaze.

The fire crews had to be called back in the 4:00 hour after a hot spot re-ignited the fire.

Barns by nature are very dry and even with the rain last night, it doesn't take much of a spark to cause a barn fire.

Although there was a lot of thunder and lightening last night there is no word on what caused the fire which is still under investigation.
