Detroit-based Atwater Brewing Co. plans to open a location in downtown Grand Rapids.

MiBiz reports that the 6,000-square-foot taproom and biergarten will be at the former Rowe Hotel, located at the northwest corner of Michigan Street and Monroe Avenue.

Brewery President and CEO Mark Rieth told MiBiz that initially he was not convinced on the location, but---

"My mind kept going back to that location because it was repurposed, and now that we’ve decided to go there, we are so, so excited. The repurposing of the location is going to be spectacular, and the outdoor space we are going to create is amazing.”

The Grand Rapids location will have capacity for 500 barrels of production, offering about 40 beers on tap. Atwater, known for its Dirty Blonde Ale and Vanilla Java Porter, will also ship in many of its beers, spirits and hard ciders from its home-base facility in Detroit.

Atwater GR, which will have indoor and outdoor seating, plus a full kitchen, is expected to open this spring.

According to MLive Media Group/ The Grand Rapids Press, the Rowe building is undergoing a total renovation, and aside from Atwater, will feature 77 apartments, eight condominiums and a top-floor penthouse, plus additional street-level retail space.
