The night before Thanksgiving is often thought of as the "biggest bar night of the year," but the Allegan County Sheriff's Department is encouraging West Michiganders to enjoy it safely. They say that spending your Thanksgiving in the drunk tank is less than ideal. Here's the message they sent out to local media today:

Good afternoon everyone, This is the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and it is traditionally thought to be the busiest bar night of the year.   Everyone is coming home for the Thanksgiving Holiday and it is an opportunity to catch up with old friends and celebrate.

Deputies understand the importance of time shared with friends and family; however, if you choose to participate in this tradition please drink responsibly or utilize a designated driver.  Thanksgiving is a time for reflecting on the past and giving thanks for the things in life we appreciate, like the chance to visit with an old friend.  A Thanksgiving spent in the “drunk tank” at the jail is not a memory you will cherish.

Besides, the turkey dinner shared around your family table is going to be more appealing than the one served by Deputies on a plastic tray.
