Whether the timing was intentional or coincidence due to the state of North Carolina passing a law banning gay marriage, Against Me! frontman Tom Gabel has revealed plans to become a woman.

Rolling Stone will feature an interview with Gabel in their upcoming issue, who will proceed with the gender transition by taking hormones and undergoing electrolysis treatments. The musician has been suffering from gender dysphoria, the condition where a person is discontent with their assigned gender, for many years now. Gabel has previously only told a few friends and family members before discussing the matter with Rolling Stone. Luckily she has the support of her wife Heather.

"For me, the most terrifying thing about this was how she would accept the news," says Gabel. "But she's been super-amazing and understanding."

The Against Me! leader will assume the name Laura Jane Grace once the transition is complete. Gabel came forward publicly because she is aware that there will be trying times ahead.

"I'm going to have embarrassing moments," admits Gabel, "and that won't be fun. But that's part of what talking to you is about – is hoping people will understand, and hoping they'll be fairly kind."

The full interview will be featured in the new issue of Rolling Stone, which hits newsstands this Friday (May 11). Gabel discusses her history of gender dysphoria, details on her transformation and what this means for the future of the band.

Against Me! are currently scheduled to play a GRD show at The Orbit Room on June 2. Tickets are on sale now at the venue box office, Ticketmaster.com and by phone at 1-800-745-3000.
