Lake Superior is known as the "Graveyard of the Great Lakes." Superior is in the top 10 haunted lakes in the world. For as long as there have been ships cruising the lake there have been stories of haunted places, lonely lightkeepers, chilling tales, and ghost ships. Could there have been a mistake regarding some of the ghost ships?

It looks like an island is floating in the picture above. These occurrences are called "Fata Morgana (mirage)" or "Superior Mirage". This phenomenon happens when light is reflected or bent as it passes through layers of air. It happens this time of year on Lake Superior when the warm air is above the cold water.

Fata Morgana mirages can also happen on land, lake, or sea. It can occur in polar regions and the desert.
